Airport Baggage Scales
Trading Standards investigations have found some scales used by some airlines to weigh luggage were inaccurate, prompting fears that flyers could be overcharged. Following one complaint, the accuracy of check-in scales was monitored. Ten out of 18 scales used by one airline registered a weight even before the customer's baggage was lifted on.
These errors are often compounded by the fact that the check-in staff could have simply pressed a button that set the scales to zero. In one case, a woman flying to Tignes, faced a £15 charge until her bags were reweighed and found to be 4kg lighter and within the weight limit.
